  • FIRE鈥檚 Faculty Legal Defense Fund helped Gow find legal representation.
  • Joe and wife Carmen say they鈥檙e fighting for both academic freedom and the right to live authentically.

Stripped of its X-rated content on YouTube, 鈥溾 could pass 鈥 at least at first 鈥 for something on Food Network: High production value. Glossy studio kitchen. Charismatic husband-and-wife hosts.

鈥淭his is just a quick overview of the cooking show,鈥 says Carmen Wilson, the wife, flipping open her computer to play the show鈥檚 trailer for me at her suburban Wisconsin dining table on a recent summer day.

鈥淪he鈥檚 Carmen. He鈥檚 Joe. And we are the 鈥楽exy Happy Couple,鈥欌 the hosts say in unison in the trailer, 鈥渁nd this is 鈥楽exy Healthy Cooking,鈥 your go-to show for plant-based food.鈥

Joe is Joe Gow, the longtime University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse media professor who held a dual role as chancellor for 17 years. That is, until November when the university discovered the Gows鈥 spent their personal time moonlighting as  and UWL  two days after Christmas.

For YouTube audiences, 鈥淪exy Healthy Cooking鈥 鈥 even 鈥(With Porn Stars!)鈥 鈥 is barely spicier than the Kung Pao tofu dish Carmen whips up with veteran adult film star and sex educator .

As Joe explains in the clip, 鈥淲e also like to have a guest star from the adult entertainment industry, to talk a little bit about food and lifestyle.鈥

For Joe and Carmen, it鈥檚 all about demonstrating that vegan cooking is the recipe for strong relationships.

罢丑别谤别鈥檚&苍产蝉辫;, sex industry news outlet XBIZ鈥檚 MILF Performer of the Year, clapping over a sweet and smoky soy curl vegan pizza. 鈥淪ounds yummy,鈥 Phillips coos. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 wait to try!鈥

Eventually, there鈥檚 Joe raising a suggestive eyebrow at AVN Hall of Famer India Summer. 鈥淭hat looks so good, I think it鈥檚 a great time to show you all the scene that we shot yesterday. I think you鈥檙e gonna like it. We had quite a physical workout there.鈥

But at least initially, if one wanted to see the full extent of Gow and Wilson鈥檚 veg-fuelled virility 鈥(with Porn Stars!),鈥 you鈥檇 have to pay and verify your age on sites like OnlyFans and LoyalFans where, early last November the couple began uploading full episodes of 鈥淪exy Healthy Cooking.鈥

鈥淲e [thought], let鈥檚 be a little more experimental and put these videos out,鈥 Joe told me, 鈥渁nd see what happens.鈥

Within weeks, they also started putting X-rated videos featuring just the two of them on free public adult sites like PornHub and xHamster.

For Joe and Carmen, it鈥檚 all about demonstrating that vegan cooking is the recipe for strong relationships.

鈥淚nvariably the question we get asked is how did you discover this curious hobby,鈥 Joe said, adding that both he and Carmen got together after leaving broken marriages. 鈥淚t was just a matter of, hey, we鈥檝e been around the block. We鈥檙e not young people. Let鈥檚 just talk openly about what we鈥檙e interested in.鈥

Can Wisconsin faculty live authentically? The Board of Regents decides next week.

The University of Wisconsin however, has suggested the couple鈥檚 brand of sexuality should remain behind closed doors.

The chair of the Wisconsin System Board told  after Gow lost his chancellor role in December, that the board was 鈥渁larmed, and disgusted, by his actions.鈥 Administrators seized Gow鈥檚 work computers and  鈥 the group  and the  鈥 to inspect the devices.

The investigation, according to the university鈥檚 report, found Gow once printed a vegan cookbook on a UWL printer. Emails advertising sex toys, which Gow explains were unsolicited, were sent to his work email.

Meanwhile, the media firestorm touched off by the peculiarity of a Midwestern porn star professor has been unrelenting, with coverage suggesting split opinions.

鈥,鈥 wrote The Atlantic鈥檚 Conor Friedersforf in January. The local brewery  of its special-issue 鈥淗ot for Chancellor鈥 fruited sour that month in just over 30 minutes. When Gow and Wilson showed up to buy some a few days later, the owner gave them the cans he鈥檇 set aside for himself. FIREcame to Gow鈥檚 defense too.

鈥淗e was a [private] citizen when he made those videos,鈥 UWL political science major Easton Moberg told . 鈥淚 don鈥檛 like to see that punished.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely not illegal,鈥 UWL Sophomore Jason Mergen told , which also reported on a petition to reinstate Gow. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a good dude.鈥

But UWL administrators disagree,  Gow damaged the university鈥檚 reputation and that  have threatened to withhold donations if Gow is not fired. State lawmakers  on the university to do something about him.

By June Gow was representing himself at a  on the issue of whether he should keep his tenure. He challenged the university鈥檚 claims that his activities caused serious reputational harm, noting enrollment and donations to the school had not decreased over the course of the months-long investigation.

A committee of five faculty peers ultimately recommended Gow鈥檚 tenure be revoked, citing a 鈥減attern of behavior demonstrating poor judgment while acting as a visible and recognizable member of the University faculty violated several applicable UW regulations and policies.鈥 This, despite UW鈥檚 inability to provide any evidence Gow鈥檚 extracurriculars impacted his fitness to teach or that the post-controversy concerns over his minor email and printing infractions weren鈥檛 just pretextual.

The Wisconsin Board of Regents will now answer with institutional finality whether Joe鈥檚 side hustle makes him unfit to be a professor. In a Sept. 20 hearing in front of the board, he鈥檒l have one last chance to show the law is on his side.

This time, he鈥檒l be joined by an attorney, hired with the help of 果冻传媒app官方鈥檚 Faculty Legal Defense Fund.

Porn, professors, and academic freedom

The law is clear. The First Amendment fully protects Gow鈥檚 hobby and his other personal-time, content-creating sexual exploits with his wife. And quite unlike firing a chancellor, ousting a tenured professor triggers a robust disciplinary process designed precisely to protect the academic freedom and other free speech rights of even the most controversial faculty.

Under , revoking tenure requires 鈥渏ust cause鈥 determined through a faculty committee hearing. Other schools sometimes define such cause as specific types of misconduct like research fraud or sexual harassment. Harvard, for example, according to a  by The Harvard Crimson, has not revoked a tenured faculty appointment in several decades.

Imposing loss of tenure in only the most extreme circumstances aligns with   on how tenure provides a crucial safeguard for academic freedom.

鈥淲hen faculty members can lose their positions because of their speech, publications, or research findings,鈥 the group , 鈥渢hey cannot properly fulfill their core responsibilities to advance and transmit knowledge.鈥 Tenure, in other words, 鈥減rovides the conditions for faculty to pursue research and innovation and draw evidence-based conclusions free from corporate or political pressure.鈥

Tenure also thoroughly protects faculty鈥檚 extramural speech 鈥 how they express themselves as citizens, off the clock.

鈥淓xtramural utterances rarely bear upon the faculty member鈥檚 fitness for continuing service,鈥 the AAUP stated in its seminal .

But John K. Wilson,  for the AAUP鈥檚 Journal of Academic Freedom, has called extramural utterances 鈥渙ne of the most misunderstood but essential aspects of academic freedom.鈥

For some perspective, Wilson penned the piece almost exactly a decade ago after University of Illinois trustees voted to  offer to Palestinian-American professor Steven Salaita. Worth underscoring is that Salaita鈥檚 crime was something, ten years later, that鈥檚 now commonplace in post-Oct. 7 academia: tweeting in defense of Gaza.

鈥淟et's cut to the chase: If you're defending #Israel right now you're an awful human being,鈥 Salaita wrote in  in 2014. 鈥淭his is not a conflict between and 鈥楬amas,鈥欌 read another, 鈥淚t鈥檚 a struggle by an Indigenous people against a colonial power. #Gaza #FreePalestine.鈥

Salaita sued and the university spent upwards of $2 million defending and settling the case.

Other tenured professors who鈥檝e been fired for controversial, but protected, commentary, have sued universities with similar success.

鈥榃e think if he loses his tenure, it鈥檚 a terrible precedent.鈥

Back at the Gow鈥檚 kitchen table, they tell me producing porn is just a small slice of their quiet life at the end of a tree-lined suburban cul-de-sac.

If you鈥檙e looking for shock-value, you won鈥檛 find it readily with these two. Unless you count a canvas bag of farmshare vegetables almost falling off the counter, or Carmen jumping up and darting onto the patio to chase away the squirrel that鈥檚 always sneaking seed from the birdfeeders.

They go to the gym a lot.

Joe was working out at Planet Fitness when he got the idea for 鈥淪exy Healthy Cooking,鈥 from none other than HGTV鈥檚 Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines.

鈥淎 good-looking couple,鈥 Joe recalled thinking. 鈥淐armen鈥檚 as telegenic as she is. Boy, what could we do together? Then I went, 鈥極h, Food Network. Cooking. She鈥檚 a great vegan cook.鈥

They鈥檝e also been buoyed by what they describe as significant community support.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had complete strangers come up and say, 鈥業 support you,鈥欌 Carmen said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e gotten letters in the mail from alumni. One of them was their family Christmas photo, saying, 鈥榃e support you.鈥欌

Two former UWL colleagues reached out to her on Facebook, telling her: 鈥溾楴o one thinks Joe should lose his tenure. It鈥檚 a terrible precedent.鈥欌 But, Carmen says one added: 鈥溾楨veryone鈥檚 too afraid to speak up.鈥欌

Carmen says she understands 鈥渉ow scary that is given what鈥檚 happening. These are people who are young in their careers and families. They can鈥檛 take the risk.鈥

Wilson and Gow鈥檚 own decision to risk their reputations by going public with their hobby has not been easy on their families, they said, who鈥檝e suffered with the sudden influx of attention.

鈥淭here are other ways that people live their lives. You can鈥檛 say that, just because it鈥檚 not like yours, they鈥檙e not qualified to teach."

鈥淧eople say, 鈥楧o you have any regrets?鈥 We say, 鈥楴o.鈥 Although the family part, that鈥檚 been hard,鈥 Gow said. 鈥淚n my family, they鈥檙e not real happy about this. My mom is from a world where it鈥檚 just鈥

鈥淪ex isn鈥檛 done,鈥 finishes Carmen, who tears up talking about how her daughter initially cut off contact when the scandal broke. For a time, she lost access to the nanny cam that gave her glimpses of her grandchildren who live out of state.

The couple are also frustrated that even widespread reporting 鈥 a Business Insider reporter  them for three days and Nightline had just been there to film 鈥 has failed to capture the whole story. Headlines and punchlines are easy. Harder to convey is the extent to which plant-based eating and their production of adult content has strengthened their marriage in important ways 鈥 ways Joe and Carmen just don鈥檛 want to have to hide.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 our whole odyssey. How can we have other people involved in our relationship but in a way that is gonna bring us closer together,鈥 Gow said. 鈥淏eing that this is her third marriage, this is my second. We were like, 鈥榃ell, we wanna have an exciting sexuality. Let鈥檚 try some different things.鈥欌

Joe says fighting to keep his faculty job at UWL isn鈥檛 about getting people to bless his lifestyle outside the classroom. It鈥檚 about having the right to live authentically. Something he says he always promoted for others at UW LaCrosse as chancellor.

鈥淚 was an administrator for a long time. From time to time, students would come to me, and they鈥檇 say:  鈥楳y teacher is weird, and I鈥檓 not comfortable.鈥欌

Joe would ask what they meant. Perhaps the professor was openly gay, or from another culture, or had a heavy accent.

鈥淲ell, yeah,鈥 Joe would tell the student. 鈥淭here are other ways that people live their lives. You can鈥檛 say that, just because it鈥檚 not like yours, they鈥檙e not qualified to teach.鈥欌
