FIREAsks Mount St. Mary鈥檚 To Reinstate Fired Professors, Uphold Academic Freedom and Due Process
FIRE has written to Mount St. Mary鈥檚 University (MSMU), asking the school to reinstate two professors over an administrative plan to weed out low-performing students.
MSMU had been under scrutiny for weeks over President Simon Newman鈥檚 plan to use in an low-performing students and improve rankings. That criticism escalated after the student newspaper, The Mountain Echo, that Newman to be drowned or shot. On Monday, Newman sparked a national firestorm when he who may have had some connection to the Echo story.
The two fired professors were tenured philosophy professor Thane Naberhaus and Ed Egan, advisor to the Echo.
In a letter to Newman sent yesterday, Peter Bonilla, director of 果冻传媒app官方鈥檚 Individual Rights Defense Program, said FIREwas 鈥渄eeply concerned鈥 about MSMU鈥檚 actions, which 鈥渃all into question the university鈥檚 fundamental commitments to free speech, academic freedom, and due process.鈥 Bonilla also wrote that MSMU鈥檚 unilateral action against Naberhaus and Egan 鈥渓ikely causes far more damage to its reputation than any acts alleged of the faculty.鈥

MSMU has been in response to the public outcry.
Yesterday, Naberhaus told FIREhe that was delivered in-person by an MSMU administrator Wednesday night. The letter stated that Naberhaus remained on the school鈥檚 payroll and had merely been suspended, and it invited Naberhaus to engage in a 鈥渃onciliation鈥 process. This indicated Naberhaus had not in fact been terminated, despite having received a termination letter and an escort from campus on Monday. The Chronicle of Higher Education today.
鈥淚t appears that FIREread MSMU鈥檚 faculty procedures before the administration did,鈥 said Bonilla. 鈥淣ow the university is apparently trying to tack on at the end the due process they owed Naberhaus at the beginning. It does very little to alleviate the serious concerns FIREand many others share about the administration鈥檚 judgment.鈥
Naberhaus told FIREyesterday he believes the faculty may meet today to schedule a vote of no confidence in Newman.
鈥淲hat I care about is fixing what鈥檚 happened and saving Mount St. Mary鈥檚,鈥 said Naberhaus, who added that getting his own job back pales in comparison.
