On April 12, 2023, Whitworth University’s student government denied the Turning Point USA student group’s request to hold an event with Chinese dissident Xi Van Fleet, citing her tweets comparing “woke culture” to Mao’s China. On April 17, FIREwrote Whitworth urging it to reverse the student government’s decision because the university’s strong commitment to free expression requires it to allow a variety of views on campus. Whitworth did not restore the event, and the students later hosted the event off-campus.
