In 2019, Wayne State University administrators issued a series of sanctions against Professor Barrett Watten, despite having held no hearing and failing to substantiate a violation of any university policy. The sanctions also cited Watten’s alleged violation of a series of professional standards from the American Association of University Professors and an unsubstantiated “much longer history of incendiary behavior.” University administrators also charged Watten with violating the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) by requesting a student's thesis from a prior institution to determine if the student resubmitted past work, shared an in-class worksheet with a visiting scholar outside of class, and discussed a student-led campaign against him on Facebook with some of the students involved, restricting his right to respond. On April 20, 2020, ������ýapp�ٷ� wrote Wayne State articulating the issues with the university’s mis-invocation of FERPA in Watten’s situation. On December 20, 2024, ������ýapp�ٷ� wrote the university again to raise concerns about the university’s commitment to due process. We urged the university to restore Watten to his full teaching responsibilities to belatedly cure the continuing lack of due process.
