On April 1, 2022, the University of Southern California held “The Black Men Will Summit,” an event aimed at addressing “the lack of restorative and healing spaces for Black male identified students at USC and in the larger community.” The event was initially described as “a space for all students who identify as Black men at USC,” but after a letter from FIREexplaining that the event—while well-intentioned—would violate federal law requiring educational institutions not discriminate on the basis of race in providing educational opportunities, the university clarified that it was “open to all USC students.”
