University of Northwestern: Administration Denies Conservative Student Group鈥檚 Request to Host Speaker Over Controversial Views

Case Overview
FIRE wrote a letter to the University of Northwestern on June 13, 2019, after UNW denied a request by a student chapter of Young Americans for Freedom to host conservative columnist Star Parker 鈥 a request denied in part because of Parker鈥檚 pro-life viewpoints. In refusing the group鈥檚 speaker, UNW explained that Parker is a 鈥渓ightning rod鈥 that 鈥減uts things in a strong way鈥 and 鈥減ushes the envelope,鈥 resulting in a 鈥減rovocative鈥 event likely to 鈥渄raw attention.鈥 The administration further stated that, despite hosting Parker twice previously, 鈥渨e really don鈥檛 bring speakers who radically hold beliefs that UNW as a whole would not agree with.鈥
FIRE鈥檚 letter explained how this viewpoint-based rejection of a student group鈥檚 proposed speaker is inconsistent with UNW鈥檚 promise to uphold free speech. After the university鈥檚 one-sentence response left these concerns unaddressed, FIREwrote a second letter to UNW on July 11 criticizing UNW鈥檚 refusal to remedy the situation, or engage in a good-faith discussion of its merits, despite hiring a public relations firm to deal with the reputational fallout from this incident.
