FIRE Victory closed

In July 2020, students at the University of North Texas petitioned administrators to disband a conservative student group. A conservative non-profit organization, displeased with the student newspaper鈥檚 鈥渂iased鈥 coverage of the controversy, issued a records request under Texas鈥 Public Information Act. The request asked administrators to require the newspaper to share unpublished materials. On August 11, FIREand the Student Press Law Center wrote to the Texas Office of the Attorney General, asking it to uphold the university鈥檚 refusal to comply with the request. The OAG鈥檚 Public Records Division agreed, ruling on October 21 that the newspaper鈥檚 materials were not 鈥減ublic information鈥 because they were not 鈥渨ritten, produced, collected, assembled, or maintained by or for the university,鈥 but were instead 鈥減roduced by private students for the student-run newspaper,鈥 and that the university did not 鈥渙wn or have a right of access to this information.鈥
