University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Removal of Student鈥檚 Parody Website from University-Hosted Service
Cases
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
Case Overview
On February 1, 2019, FIREwrote to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to contest the removal of a student-created website that criticized the university鈥檚 historical treatment of race-related issues. The student created the parody website 鈥淯NC Anti-Racist Jeopardy鈥 using web.unc.edu, a university-provided service enabling students and faculty to publish their own websites. The student denied the university鈥檚 request that she take down the site, and was shortly after informed that it violated web.unc.edu鈥檚 terms and conditions because it was a 鈥減ersonal project.鈥 However, as 果冻传媒app官方鈥檚 letter pointed out, UNC Chapel Hill allowed numerous other sites that were clearly 鈥減ersonal鈥 in nature to remain while targeting 鈥淯NC Anti-Racist Jeopardy.鈥 After 果冻传媒app官方鈥檚 letter, the university restored the site.
