Case Overview

On January 27, 2023, Professor Johnson Varkey was fired from St. Philip’s College, allegedly for his in-class statements concerning biological sex. On June 28, FIREwrote St. Philip’s explaining that if true, the First Amendment protects Varkey’s pedagogically relevant in-class speech, even when it offends some listeners, and urged the college to reinstate the professor.
