Santa Clara University: Student Government Rejects Turning Point USA Chapter Over Its Political Stances
Cases
Santa Clara University
Case Overview
In a February 2, 2017 meeting, the Santa Clara University (SCU) Associated Student Government (ASG) rejected recognition status for a prospective Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter on the basis of the group鈥檚 political stances and potential ties to the national TPUSA organization. The next day, TPUSA鈥檚 members were told by an ASG Senator that if TPUSA were to attempt to gain recognition next semester, its members should consider renaming the group the 鈥淔ree Trade Club.鈥 In a February 17 letter, FIREcalled on SCU to reconsider ASG鈥檚 viewpoint-based rejection of TPUSA and uphold the university鈥檚 commitments to the freedoms of speech and association. On March 3, 2017, Vice Provost of Student Life Jeanne Rosenberger reversed ASG鈥檚 decision and granted recognition to the chapter.
