On Feb. 6, 2024, ten members of the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary wrote a to Rutgers, asking questions about the University’s Center for Security, Race and Rights, whether the Center is funded by taxpayers or supported by foreign governments. FIREwrote to Rutgers on March 18, calling on the institution to maintain its commitment to the First Amendment and resist government pressure to curtail the speech of faculty members and guest speakers at the Center, even if that speech is subjectively offensive to some. FIREalso called on Rutgers to share the answers it provided to Senators’ inquiries.
