Midwestern State University: Professor’s Criticisms of Police and ‘White People’ Violate ‘Respect’ Policy
Cases
Midwestern State University
Case Overview
During the civil unrest following the homicide of George Floyd, Midwestern State University professor Nathan Jun posted on his personal Facebook page in support of the protests, encouraging protesters to “respect existing law†but to expect police to respond violently. An elected county commissioner complained that Jun’s Facebook page featured a “black Antifa flag,†as others complained about Jun’s comment that “[w]hite people care more about protecting consumer baubles than standing up against the extrajudicial slaughter of their fellow citizens.†The university’s president told Jun he violated a policy requiring him to “exercise appropriate restraint†and “show respect for the opinions of other[s].â€
