In April 2014, Loyola University Chicago informed the Loyola FIREFor Liberty student organization that it would be required to censor its “free speech wall” and remove any messages that were “grossly offensive” or “contrary to the University’s Catholic, Jesuit mission and heritage.” On April 21, FIREwrote a letter to Loyola reminding the university of its obligation to honor its promises of broad expressive rights on campus. Despite its earlier demands against the group, the university ultimately backed down, and the event transpired as planned, with no censorship of any material on the free speech wall.
