Case Overview

FIRE Victory closed

In April 2014, Loyola University Chicago informed the Loyola FIREFor Liberty student organization that it would be required to censor its 鈥渇ree speech wall鈥 and remove any messages that were 鈥済rossly offensive鈥 or 鈥渃ontrary to the University鈥檚 Catholic, Jesuit mission and heritage.鈥 On April 21, FIREwrote a letter to Loyola reminding the university of its obligation to honor its promises of broad expressive rights on campus. Despite its earlier demands against the group, the university ultimately backed down, and the event transpired as planned, with no censorship of any material on the free speech wall.
