Hamline University: Student Suspended after Advocating Concealed Carry on Campus
Cases
Hamline University
Case Overview
closed
In April 2007, Hamline University suspended student Troy Scheffler after he sent an email suggesting that the Virginia Tech massacre might have been stopped if students had been allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus. Scheffler was suspended for two days, without due process, and was required to undergo a mandatory 鈥渕ental health evaluation鈥 before being allowed to return to school. Although FIREwrote to Hamline three times in 2007 protesting its violation of Scheffler鈥檚 expressive and due process rights, Hamline鈥檚 administrators and attorneys insisted that the university鈥檚 assessment of the situation was correct.
