In April 2007, Hamline University suspended student Troy Scheffler after he sent an email suggesting that the Virginia Tech massacre might have been stopped if students had been allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus. Scheffler was suspended for two days, without due process,  and was required to undergo a mandatory “mental health evaluation” before being allowed to return to school. Although FIREwrote to Hamline three times in 2007 protesting its violation of Scheffler’s expressive and due process rights, Hamline’s administrators and attorneys insisted that the university’s assessment of the situation was correct.
