On November 17, 2016, the Fordham United Student Government  approved FIREfor Justice in Palestine鈥檚 application for recognition, noting that SJP 鈥渇ulfills a need for open discussion and demonstrates that Fordham is a place that exemplifies diversity of thought.鈥 On December 22, Dean of FIREKeith Eldredge overruled the USG and said he would not grant SJP official recognition, writing that he 鈥渃annot support an organization whose sole purpose is advocating political goals of a specific group, and against a specific country鈥 and that 鈥渢he Israeli-Palestinian conflict 鈥 often leads to polarization rather than dialogue.鈥 In response to media attention, Fordham officials released a statement reaffirming Eldredge鈥檚 decision, claiming, 鈥淭he narrowness of FIREfor Justice in Palestine鈥檚 political focus makes it more akin to a lobbying group than a student club.鈥 On January 25, 2017, FIREand the National Coalition Against Censorship wrote a letter to Fordham, calling on the university to reverse its rejection of SJP and reaffirm the university鈥檚 commitment to free speech for students. On January 27, FIREand NCAC wrote again to Fordham. A lengthy legal battle ensued, and in May 2021, SJP lost.
