On September 15, 2006, FIREwrote to Columbia University to express concern about a policy at its Teachers College requiring students to demonstrate a 鈥渃ommitment to social justice鈥 and listing 鈥淩espect for Diversity and Commitment to Social Justice鈥 as a 鈥渄isposition鈥 expected from students and graduates of the college. After FIREsent several letters to both Columbia and Teachers College arguing that evaluating students according to their commitment to an officially defined ideal is a violation of students鈥 rights, Teachers College President Susan Fuhrman told FIREthat the policy would be reevaluated.
