In 2008, interns in the Feminist and Gender Studies program at Colorado College distributed a flyer called 鈥淭he Monthly Rag,鈥 which included a reference to 鈥渕ale castration,鈥 an announcement about a lecture on 鈥渇eminist porn,鈥 and an explanation of 鈥減acking鈥 (pretending to have a phallus). In parody of 鈥淭he Monthly Rag,鈥 in February 2008,  two male students distributed a flyer called 鈥淭he Monthly Bag鈥 under the pseudonym 鈥淐oalition of Some Dudes.鈥 Their flyer included references to 鈥渢ough guy wisdom,鈥 鈥渃hainsaw etiquette,鈥 the shooting range of a sniper rifle, and a quotation about 鈥渇emale violence and abuse鈥 of men from the website batteredmen.com. After several complaints about the flyer, the students received notice on March 3 that the flyer was interpreted by members of the community as an  鈥渁ttempt to target certain campus populations with the intention of devaluing, intimidating, or even threatening harm.鈥 FIREwrote to Colorado College on March 21, explaining that parody is unequivocally protected by free expression, which the college promises its students. On March 25, the students were informed that they had been found guilty of violating the college鈥檚 鈥渧iolence鈥 policy, and in April, the students鈥 appeals were denied. In June, the college鈥檚 Board of Trustees affirmed the college鈥檚 decision.
