University of Michigan Re-Invites Alice Walker After Disinvitation Controversy
Last week, 果冻传媒app官方鈥檚 Samantha Harris reported that the University of Michigan鈥檚 Center for the Education of Women (CEW) had rescinded its invitation to The Color Purple author Alice Walker to speak at CEW鈥檚 50th anniversary celebration. According to Inside Higher Ed, CEW and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies are now on campus after all鈥攂ut not at the 50th anniversary celebration.
Walker had claimed that she was disinvited because her criticism of Israel offended some university donors. But an email sent to faculty by Provost Martha E. Pollack last Friday that the decision to rescind Walker鈥檚 invitation 鈥渨as based solely on the celebratory nature [CEW] hoped to achieve at their anniversary event.鈥 (No, we don鈥檛 know what that means.) The email also emphasized 鈥渢he university鈥檚 firm commitment to free speech and to the expression of diverse viewpoints.鈥
Pollack noted that she 鈥渞espect[s] the right of individual academic units to make decisions about whom they invite to campus, consistent with university principles and values.鈥 While universities are not obliged to invite any particular guests to speak, giving in to pressure from an already-invited speaker鈥檚 critics and that invitation risks establishing a heckler鈥檚 veto, a dangerous tool for silencing debate. Michigan鈥攁nd all schools鈥攎ust be careful not to allow this method of stifling unpopular views on controversial issues.
Walker has not yet revealed whether she will speak at Michigan. For more on the and the latest , click over to Inside Higher Ed.
