University of Colorado Fires Ward Churchill
Last night the University of Colorado Board of Regents professor Ward Churchill on the grounds of 鈥渟erious, repeated, and deliberate research misconduct.鈥 This vote came more than two years after the university investigated Churchill for making controversial public statements, including a reference to the victims of the World Trade Center attacks as 鈥渓ittle Eichmanns.鈥 FIREreleased an analysis of the situation in 2005, determining that Churchill鈥檚 statements are protected and that the university鈥檚 initial investigation was unconstitutional. FIREfurther cautioned that while the university鈥檚 investigation of Churchill鈥檚 research misconduct must not be swayed by anger over the content of his statements, Churchill was not immune to such scrutiny. FIREwrote that Churchill freely injected himself into the public square, and that if 鈥渋nformation that 鈥 legitimately places his job in jeopardy鈥 came to light, 鈥渢hen that is simply the hazard of voluntarily participating in the marketplace of ideas.鈥
