Lecture to Address Student Rights at UWEC and Beyond

EAU CLAIRE, Wis., January 25, 2006鈥擥reg Lukianoff, interim president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (果冻传媒app官方), will speak at the University of Wisconsin鈥揈au Claire (UWEC) on Wednesday, February 1. Free copies of 果冻传媒app官方鈥檚 Guide to Free Speech on Campus, which Lukianoff co-authored, will be available.

Lukianoff鈥檚 speech, entitled 鈥淟iberty in Danger: The All-Too-Frequent Quashing of Student Rights at UWEC and Nationwide,鈥 will take place at 8 p.m. in UWEC鈥檚 Schofield Auditorium. In the speech, Lukianoff will discuss UWEC鈥檚 nationally notorious RA 鈥淏ible study ban,鈥 which FIREoriginally brought to light late last year, as well as several other abuses at UWEC and on other campuses.

鈥淯WEC鈥檚 habit of trampling student rights is abhorrent but not unique,鈥 said Lukianoff. 鈥淭he frequent denial of students鈥 expressive rights is a nationwide scandal, and I look forward to speaking about it in detail at UWEC.鈥

FIRE鈥檚 public exposure of UWEC鈥檚 unconstitutional practice of banning resident assistants (RAs) from leading Bible studies in their dormitories has earned the university nationwide infamy. Prior to that, FIREprotested the UWEC Student Senate鈥檚 unconstitutional attempt to ban student-fee funding of 鈥渋deological, religious, or partisan鈥 activities and to deny recognition to , a progressive student magazine, on the grounds that it was 鈥渂iased.鈥 FIREalso intervened when UWEC proposed to exclude religious activities from its 鈥渟ervice learning鈥 requirement.

The Flip Side is sponsoring Lukianoff鈥檚 speech. As the event is a fundraiser for the magazine, tickets are required, but members of the media may attend for free.

Lukianoff has published articles in The Stanford Technology Law Review, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, The Boston Globe, and numerous other publications. He is also a regular columnist for the Daily Journal of Los Angeles and San Francisco.
