As Babson College lands on 果冻传媒app官方鈥檚 list of the 10 worst colleges for free speech today, its former faculty member 鈥 summarily 鈥渋nvestigated鈥 and fired over a Facebook post criticizing President Trump鈥檚 Iran rhetoric 鈥 for the first time about the incident.

Asheen Phansey, speaking with WGBH鈥檚 Jim Braude about how Babson responded, discusses the bewildering experience of seeing his college characterize his joke as a 鈥渢hreat鈥 while he was receiving actual threats from people angry about his post. Phansey rightfully points out that Babson鈥檚 response will have a chilling effect:

鈥淚 do think it鈥檚 chilling. The place that we should be having this conversation 鈥 about anything from war to climate to anything that might touch controversial topics 鈥 the one place it should be protected the most is on college campuses. If faculty, students, staff are discussing something in a place that has committed to free speech principles, it鈥檚 absolutely chilling to think that we have to self-censor because someone might willfully misconstrue it.鈥

Phansey is absolutely right. FIREtold Babson the same in our January 9 letter to the institution.

Braude notes that WGBH asked Babson to explain 鈥渨hat that 鈥榩rompt and thorough investigation鈥 was,鈥 but Babson 鈥渄idn鈥檛 respond.鈥 That鈥檚 understandable, because there was nothing to investigate: The post was clearly political hyperbole, and Babson鈥檚 claim that it was 鈥渃ooperating鈥 with law enforcement appears to have been misleading.

Braude also asks Phansey about 鈥渞acist responses鈥 he received from the public, including those calling for Phansey to be 鈥渄eported.鈥 Phansey deadpans: 鈥淚 was wondering if they wanted to deport me back to South Carolina,鈥 before explaining the importance of being free to question and criticize American officials.

The interview is worth watching in full:

Babson鈥檚 rush to terminate a faculty member in order to avoid controversy spectacularly backfired, and its administration鈥檚 abandonment of principles has earned Babson its designation as one of the nation's worst schools for free speech.
