The Delaware Approach: Coming Soon to a Campus Near You?

The University of Delaware鈥檚 senior residence life staff are so proud of their totalitarian approach to student 鈥渆ducation鈥 that they are hoping to export their model to educators from around the country.

In the November鈥揇ecember 2006 issue of 鈥攁 magazine for college and university educators鈥擴D Director of Residence Life Kathleen Kerr and Associate Director of Residence Life James Tweedy published an article entitled 鈥淏eyond Seat Time and Student Satisfaction: A Curricular Approach to Residential Education.鈥 In that article, Kerr and Tweedy discuss their belief that residence halls 鈥渞epresent an important setting for delivering a curriculum focused on citizenship development.鈥 They discuss their desired 鈥渓earning goals,鈥 which include requiring each student to, among other things, 鈥渆xplore societal privilege and the experiences of those disadvantaged in our democracy,鈥 鈥渆xplore social identity privilege,鈥 and 鈥渆xplore class privilege.鈥 They also discuss potential improvements to the program, such as鈥攃reepily鈥斺渢he possibility of identifying behavioral factors that can be observed and recorded by hall staff members.鈥

Then, in January 2007, Delaware . According to a university press release, the Institute focused 鈥渙n UD鈥檚 efforts to use a curricular approach to residential education as a replacement for the traditional programming model.鈥 (Those following this case may remember that the quaint and outmoded 鈥減rogramming model鈥 in that it 鈥渞elies on voluntary attendance.鈥) Representatives from more than 35 schools across North America registered to attend the Institute.

Let鈥檚 hope this frightening approach to education鈥攚hich relies on indoctrination rather than mere exposure to ideas鈥攊s shut down before it spreads any further.
