The University of Connecticut requires incoming classes of medical students to pledge allegiance not only to the Hippocratic Oath and patient care, but also to DEI and social justice.
UConn鈥檚 revised version of the oath includes a promise to 鈥渁ctively support policies that promote social justice and specifically work to dismantle policies that perpetuate inequities, exclusion, discrimination and racism.鈥
But the First Amendment doesn鈥檛 just protect the right to speak 鈥 it also protects the right not to speak. A public institution like UConn cannot force its medical students to pledge fealty to its own preferred set of political principles.
Stand up for free speech at the University of Connecticut today by sending an email to the Dean of UConn School of Medicine, urging him to stop requiring students to commit to ideals they might not believe in.
